The City's sister city relationship with Kastelorizo (Megisti) was inaugurated on 10 August 1984. The increasing population of Kastelorizan's in Western Australia was a key factor in establishing a partnership with Kastelorizo. From 1982 to 1988 the City's Lord Mayor was Mick Michael, a Greek of Kastelorizan origin.

The objectives of the sister city relationships and friendship agreements are the mutual desire for international peace and goodwill, to encourage a wider understanding of other cultures and to foster economic development, tourism and trade relations.

Kastelorizo (Megisti) lies in a stunning location off the coast of Turkey, located only eleven kilometres from Rhodes.

Kastelorizo (Megisti) is a very small island of the Dodecanese Archipelago, with a population of approximately 200. It is a rocky island in a wonderful clean sea and covers an area of 9 km2 and has a coastline of 19 km.

The community relies on tourism and fishing to boost the island's economy.

The most striking feature of the island is the brightly painted houses, a tradition dating back to the Byzantine and Turkish time, when the colours of the house would display the status of its mistress.

The gracious two-storey neoclassical houses with the brightly painted doors and windows, wooden balconies and tile roofs on the waterfront and the majestic domes of the churches, are testimony to the island's former prosperity.

Recent Activities

April/May 2002: Official City of Perth Sister City delegation visits Rhodes, Megisti and Vasto.

6 October 2004: The Lord Mayor hosts a Civic Reception at Council House for the Ambassador of Greece to Australia Mr Fotios-Jean Zydas.

30 July 2010 - Two students from Santrapeia School on Kastellorizo participate in an exchange program with Perth’s St Andrew’s Grammar. The two students from Megisti-Kastellorizo attended a courtesy call with Cr Eleni Evangel. Also in attendance were the two students from St Andrew’s Grammar who visited Megist-Kastellorizo in 2009, the Perth host family and the Director of the Australian Friends of Kastellorizio community organisation.
