Safer Design Guidelines
Safer design is an important issue in the planning and design of buildings and adjacent public or private spaces. The City of Perth Safer Design Guidelines (2004) provide technical guidance to reduce the risk of crime as well as reduce the fear of crime, and specifically relate to the City's higher density mixed use environment.
Safer Design is sometimes called CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) or Designing out Crime. The City of Perth's Safer Design Guidelines is a resource that should be used to help minimise opportunities for crime in new developments. If incorporated early at the planning and design phase, it should improve the amenity and safety of the development at no additional cost. The Safer Design principles are now reinforced by the WA Planning Commission Designing Out Crime Planning Guidelines (2006).
